Leaders Leading with Empathy

Leaders leading with empathy? Yes, please! 🙌 Seriously, can we get a collective round of applause for those who are doing it right?

I’ve been fielding a lot of questions lately about how organizations are navigating the, shall we say, dynamic shifts in the humanitarian sector. And, let’s be honest, I’ve got THOUGHTS. Today, though, I want to shine a light on the incredible leaders who are stepping up and making a real difference.

Last week, I had the privilege of running workshops for a team facing an office closure. Yep, you read that right. Office closure. Tough stuff. But here’s the kicker: this workshop happened because of a leader who gets it. They understood their team needed more than a band-aid solution, more than just a quick “ohm” and a breathing exercise. (Don’t get me wrong, you know I’m all about yoga and meditation – but sometimes, you need more than a moment of zen.)

The Power of Being Heard

True well-being, in my experience, often boils down to something incredibly simple: being heard. This leader recognized the need for practical, tangible support. They didn’t just offer platitudes; they offered tools. So, we dove deep into elevator pitches, those dreaded “why should I hire you?” questions, and everything in between.

And let me tell you, the energy in that room was electric! It was a safe space, a supportive environment where everyone gave and received real, constructive feedback. They weren’t just sharpening their interview skills; they were leveling up their communication game, building confidence, and finding their voice.

This leader understood that their team needed to be heard, prepared, and empowered. That’s empathy in action, folks. That’s what it looks like when leadership goes beyond the surface and addresses the real human needs of a team.

Amazing Leadership Shines in the Chaos

In the midst of the chaos and uncertainty that often plagues the humanitarian sector, amazing leadership shines. It’s the leaders who recognize the humanity in their teams, who prioritize their well-being, and who create spaces for genuine connection and growth.

This experience was a powerful reminder that even in the toughest of times, empathy and action can make all the difference. It’s not about having all the answers; it’s about listening, understanding, and providing the support your team truly needs.

So, what can we learn from this?

  • Listen actively: Truly hear what your team is saying, both verbally and non-verbally.
  • Prioritize practical support: Don’t just offer platitudes; provide tangible tools and resources.
  • Create safe spaces: Foster environments where people feel comfortable sharing their concerns and ideas.
  • Empathy is not a weakness: It’s a superpower that builds trust and fosters resilience.
